Engagement

The day R asked me to marry him was one of the best nights in my life. It was the day before his birthday, June 21, 2003, and I wanted to do something really special for him. I told him not to make plans for the night because I was going to plan something nice and the only thing I could tell him was that he shouldn’t eat dinner.

That day I had everything planned to a T, my sister was out of town so she let me use her apartment for the night. I had gotten him tons of gifts and they were all wrapped up beautifully. I decided to cook one of his favorite meals that I prepare: Spaghetti and Chicken Parm, a salad, bread and some great wine. I went over to the apartment and got everything ready.

When he came by to pick me up that night at my parents house, I had on a spectacular dress and I felt really beautiful, I wanted him to have the best that day, so I told him we were going out, but that my sister had called me so that I could pick up some documents she needed from her apartment and that though I was really mad that we had to make a stop, it would only be for a couple of minutes. When we got to the parking lot in the apartment complex, I told him to wait in the car and that I would be right back. Once in the apartment, I had set up a huge heart of chocolate kisses in the center of the floor in the living room and in the middle of the heart, I spelled out “I Love You”, at the end of the heart and the two sides, I had placed candles and all around it also, I had placed all of his gifts around the heart. To get him to go up to the apartment, I told him that my sister had turned off the breakers to the electricity and I couldn’t get them to work, so I needed his help, while he was coming up the stairs, I lit all the candles and turned off all the lights and sat on the couch to wait for him. The look of surprise on his face was so great. I had really surprised him.

We spent a great night, just talking and eating our dinner, we have always had the type of relationship where we can talk all night, so it was really nice. I had written in his card one of my long letters of love to him in which I said I loved him more than I had ever loved anybody else and that I wanted him to be part of my future. I said I wanted to be the mother of his kids and the grandmother to his grandchildren. After talking for a while he said to me “Would you marry me”, I thought he was asking if I would marry him someday and I said, sure, someday... And he just looked at me, so hurt, I asked him what was wrong, and he said, I just asked you to marry me. I said in total shock “You were proposing”? He said “Of course” and in my state of shock, I didn’t answer, and he kind of shouted... “WELL”? I busted out laughing and said “OF COURSE”.

The rest of the night was unforgettable and I really enjoyed every minute of it. I don’t think it hit me that I was engaged till the next day when he told me that he didn’t care when we got married as long as it was before the New Year came in. We were married four months after he asked me and I still love the way I feel when I think about that day. I wanted to surprise him and he totally surprised me. In honor of that night we gave out chocolate kisses at our wedding.
